In Guyana, speeding is the most prevalent traffic violation, significantly contributing to road accidents and fatalities. For instance, between September 10 and 16, 2023, the Guyana Police Force recorded 2,247 traffic violations, with 652 attributed to speeding.

Similarly, in a one-week period in January 2024, 1,043 speeding tickets were issued, underscoring the persistent nature of this issue.

Other common traffic violations include:

  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI): Operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs is a serious offense. In the same September 2023 period, 55 DUI cases were reported.

  • Unsafe Vehicle Maintenance: Driving vehicles that do not meet safety standards can lead to fines and contribute to road hazards.

To address these issues, the Guyana Police Force has intensified enforcement measures, including the implementation of an electronic ticketing system to improve efficiency and compliance.
