As of November 16, 2024, Guyana is undertaking several significant road construction projects aimed at enhancing transportation infrastructure and improving services for its citizens.
Linden-Soesdyke Highway Reconstruction
In August 2024, the Government of Guyana signed a US$161 million contract with a joint venture between Namalco Construction Services of Trinidad & Tobago and Guyamerica Construction Inc. of Guyana to reconstruct the Linden-Soesdyke Highway. The project includes the installation of approximately 2,900 street lights, reflective road markings, and lay-bys for trucks, aiming to accommodate the increasing tonnage that traverses the highway daily.
Schoonord to Crane Four-Lane Highway
On August 29, 2024, the new Schoonord to Crane four-lane highway was officially commissioned. This modern roadway is expected to revolutionize transportation, stimulate economic growth, and create new job opportunities in Region Three.
East Coast Road Project Phase II
The Government of Guyana, in collaboration with the People's Republic of China, has initiated Phase II of the East Coast Road Project, valued at US$192 million. This phase includes the extension of the Railway Embankment Road into four lanes from Sheriff Street to Orange Nassau, the extension of the main East Coast Roadway from Orange Nassau to Mahaica, and the rehabilitation of the existing East Coast Demerara road from Belfield to Orange Nassau. The project also encompasses the construction of 48 bridges and 22 culverts, along with another bridge across the Hope Canal.
Community Road Developments in Region Three
In August 2024, seventy-four contracts totaling $1.3 billion were awarded for road construction across several communities in Region Three, including La Parfaite Harmonie, Onderneeming, Westminster, Recht Door Zee, and Lust-en-Rust. These developments aim to improve local infrastructure and accessibility.
These initiatives reflect Guyana's commitment to modernizing its road infrastructure, enhancing connectivity, and providing better services to its population.
