In January 2024, the Government of Guyana unveiled its national budget, allocating a substantial $204.1 billion towards the enhancement of the country's road and bridge infrastructure. This investment underscores the government's commitment to improving transportation networks and ensuring road safety for all citizens.
Key Allocations:
Major Highways and Bridges: Significant funds have been designated for the development and rehabilitation of major highways and bridges. Notable projects include the continuation of the Sheriff Street to Orange Nassau four-lane highway, the construction of a new four-lane highway from Schoonord to Crane, and the advancement of the New Demerara River Bridge.
Community Roads: Recognizing the importance of local connectivity, the budget allocates $73.2 billion for the rehabilitation and construction of community roads across all ten administrative regions. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and improve the quality of life in various communities.
Hinterland Roads: To bridge the gap between coastal and hinterland regions, $5.5 billion has been earmarked for the development of roads in areas such as Kwebanna, Lethem, Mabaruma, Matthew's Ridge, and the South Pakaraimas. This investment seeks to promote economic activities and integration within these regions.
Road Safety Initiatives:
In tandem with infrastructure development, the government is implementing a robust road safety and traffic management plan. This plan includes the deployment of information technology solutions, such as a new radar system, and the introduction of updated laws and regulations aimed at reducing road accidents and enhancing overall traffic safety.
These comprehensive measures reflect Guyana's strategic approach to fostering sustainable development through improved transportation infrastructure and heightened road safety standards.
